blind Athletes Day

Our goal for this event is to empower blind and visually impaired individuals by providing resources, fostering community, and creating opportunities to stay active alongside fellow athletes. Any organizations that would like to attend, host a table, or lead a session, please let us know! We would love to collaborate with you.

Getting to the event

  • Driving: Parking is limited to street parking only. 
  • Public Transit: The closest metro station is the Columbia Heights station, which is a 5 to 10 minute walk from the center.
  • Rideshare: Drivers can drop you off directly at the center.

  • Sign up is required for participation in each sport. Please click on the sports you would like to participate in, to sign up! It is OK to change your mind last minute or split your time between two sports that are running simultaneously!

Tandem Biking

Goalball

10:00am-12:00pm

Two teams of three players try to throw or roll a heavy ball past the opposing team and into their 9-meter-wide goal.

Blind Cricket

2:30pm-4:00pm

Blind cricket is an adapted version of cricket developed for athletes with visual impairments and relies heavily on audio tracking, precise verbal cues, and rule modifications.

Self-Defense

2:30pm-4:00pm

A system of awareness, boundary-setting, and physical techniques designed to help individuals protect themselves from physical harm or assault.

Volunteer

Shifts between 8:30am-5:30pm

1:00pm-2:30pm

A fast-paced, 5-a-side adaptation of soccer. It is designed for athletes with visual impairments and relies heavily on sound, spatial communication, and guide orientation.

Blind Tennis

1:00pm-2:30pm

An adapted version of traditional tennis designed for athletes with visual impairments, using an audible ball, a smaller court, and customized bounce rules.

10:00am-12:00pm

A style of cycling where two or more riders share a single tandem bicycle with seats placed one behind the other.
